The Land and our Vineyards

The Ostatu winery owns 34 hectares of its own vineyards, and manages a further 15 hectares that belong to other family members. The oldest vines are on small plots in the municipal districts of Samaniego, Leza and Laguardia, and are planted on south-facing slopes that are protected by the Sierra de Cantabria Mountains from cold winds from the north.

The soil type, the direction in which the vineyards face, the climate, and the vines themselves are the main factors that determine the quality of the resulting wines. In the Ostatu vineyards, all these factors come together favourably as our vines are planted on exceptionally good soils, which are drained naturally thanks to their limestone and clay composition, which allows for a regular supply of water and minerals. The different grape types are planted according to where they are best suited with regard to the soil type, and we have used grafts which are perfectly adapted to the terrain, and the vines benefit from an ideal microclimate.

Finally, on top of all this we must not forget the people behind all this, and their love for their work and for the land, which are fundamental factors in the quality of the Ostatu wines.
