The Soil
Over 95% of our vines grow on an ochre coloured chalky clay soil, of generally uneven relief, with numerous gullies and small hills, and this soil means that our wines have every chance of being of good quality, and it confers on them a delicate aroma and a very smooth flavour.
The clayey character of the soil means that the rain that falls late on only slowly permeates down, and thus does not allow much water to pass through easily to the grapes during the ripening period. This means that the grapes are smaller than they would otherwise be, and constitutes a further important factor in their quality.
What is more, the relatively soft rock has many cracks in it, which means that the roots of the vines can go deep down in their search for nutrients, and for water too when the plant needs it. This means that the grapes ripen in the best way, and gives the wines of the Rioja Alavesa their distinctive character.
